Gary R Culbertson MD

Dr. Gary Culbertson, MD, FACS was the first Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery to establish a solo practice in Sumter, SC in 1994. He was Board Certified in General & Plastic Surgery. Dr Culbertson is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), the American Society of Aesthetic Surgery (ASAPS) and Past President of the South Carolina Society of Plastic Surgery (SCSPS). He was Chairman or Vice Chair of 5 Committees and a member of over 25 National Plastic Surgery Society’s Committees (Ethics, Judicial Council, Patient Safety, Government Affairs, Health Policy, Pathways to Leadership, etc.). He served as a Disciplinary Commissioner (14yrs) and is a Plastic Surgery Expert (10 yrs) for the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners (SCBOME).


Dr. Culbertson was the first surgeon in this area of South Carolina to perform:

-Replantation surgery of amputated fingers, Nerve grafting, Free tissue transfers/free flaps for breast, face and upper/lower extremity reconstruction from trauma and cancer
-Breast Reconstruction, Lifts, Reductions and Augmentations
-LipoAbdominoplasty’s, Brachioplasty’s, Face/Neck lifts, Fat grafting to several areas of the body (BBL), Endoscopic Brow Lifts and Lower body lifts.

In 2003 Dr. Culbertson expanded his facility on 18 Miller Rd opening the first privately owned Office Based Surgical Center in Sumter, SC. The Iris Surgery Center was a 4,000 sq ft Level C Accredited Surgical Facility offering General Anesthesia.

Dr. Culbertson specialized in Hand and Oculoplastic Surgery. After 30 years he closed his business in 2024.

Dr Culbertson. is a USA Veteran who was Airborne Qualified and received his Flight Surgeons wings while working at the USA Institute of Surgical Research Center (USAISR). Dr Culbertson is now the Chief of Plastic Surgery at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA in Columbia, SC.
